The square was named "Platea Trinitas" until the XVIth century because of the "Trinità dei Monti" church that dominates it. Then it changed its name to "Spanish square" because the Spanish ambassador had his residence here. In the XVI century it started to be the most important area of the Roman cultural and artistic life. The "Trinità dei Monti" steps are the most original and visible part of the square. At the center of the square is the "Barcaccia" fountain that was built in 1629 by Pietro Bernini and his son, Gian Lorenzo. Every year in July, the fashion defilés are organized here and the most important Italian stylists present their new collections. |
